Jennifer is waiting in the car as Jack talks to someone on a pay phone...

Jennifer: This is your idea of fun, Jack? What have I gotten myself into this time?

Jack, on the phone: Right. Right. My only concern is that Abigail is taken care of. Right. Right. And no later than 1600 hours. Roger. [He hangs up and dials another number, waiting until someone picks up] You and that sexy voice of yours... No, no, no. Wait. Wait. It's me. It's me. It's Jack. It's Jack. Listen. Listen. I need a favor. I know it's last-minute, but when I tell you what it's about, I think you'll want to help.

[Jack gets back in the car with Jennifer]

Jennifer: What's going on?

Jack: Nothing. I just had to make a few phone calls and check with the baby-sitter, make sure that Abigail got picked up.

Jennifer: Hmm. I thought you said that your cell phone wasn't working? [She clicks the power button and it beeps]

Jack, trying to play dumb: How did you get it to work?!

Jennifer: What is going on? All right? I'm not going to play these games anymore. Why did you make calls out of that pay phone? What are you up to?

Jennifer: What are you plotting?

Jack: Questions, questions, questions. Just like the good old days - you ask them, I avoid them.

Jennifer: No, because if this were the good old days, you'd be turning this car around and we'd be going right back home.

Jack: Don't be so negative. Lighten up. The night is young.

Jennifer: Yes, that's what terrifies me.

Jack: Come on. You and I are stepping out. By jiminy, we're gonna have a barrel of fun.

Jennifer, laughing: "By jiminy"? What? Have you been reading children's books? From 1950?

Jack: Don't knock the 1950's. They were vintage years! Elvis hit the scene. All that destined-to-be-retro furniture, marriages forever - come on, Jennifer. Let's do it. Let's start a trend. No. Better yet - better yet, let's make it 1939, and prepare, if you will, [munchkin accent] to follow me down the yellow brick road. Follow, follow, follow...

Jennifer: I'm so scared, but all right. Let's go.

Jack: That's the spirit, my little munchkin. Emerald city, here we come. Hey!

[Jack and Jennifer arrive at Tuscany, which isn't open for business yet. Jack tries to open the door, but it's locked.]

Jennifer: Well, you know what, Jack? It's - it's the thought that counts, and next time, you'll just plan ahead.

Jack: No, no, no. Hold your horses. We are here for an early dinner. I am telling you we are, uh - oh!

[Maggie opens the door and it hits Jack in the nose.]

Maggie: Oh! Ooh.

Jack: Never mind.

Maggie: I'm afraid you're a little early.

Jennifer: I know, I told Jack. I'm sorry. Don't go to any trouble for us, Maggie. Really.

Maggie: No trouble. I mean, after all, you're family, and besides, this is a very special occasion.

Jennifer, suspiciously: Oh, that's exactly what Jack said!

Jack: Great minds think alike. Right, Maggie?

Maggie, smiling: Oh, yes, I wholeheartedly agree.

Jennifer: Wait a minute... Don't even tell me that he hoodwinked you into one of his pranks!

Maggie: Decide for yourself. [She turns Jennifer around, and Abby is revealed to be sitting amongst [presents, cake, and a sign that says "Happy Birthday Jennifer!"]

Abby: Happy birthday, Mommy!

[Jennifer beams as Dave, Maggie, Jack, and Abby sing "Happy Birthday" to her]

Abby: Happy birthday, Mommy!

Jennifer: Oh, thank you, Baby!

Abby: Were you surprised?

Jennifer: I was so surprised! I'm flabbergasted!

Abby: Daddy set the whole thing up! We're good at keeping secrets, aren't we?

Jennifer: Yes, you sure are.

Maggie: Okay! Okay! Now let's take a family picture over by the table.

Jack: All right, great. [he pushes the table over] I'll move this out of the way.

Jennifer: Should I sit here?

Jack: Yeah, you sit right there and, uh - [Jack, Jennifer, and Abby get situated with Abby in the middle.]

Maggie: Here we go. Oh, perfect. That's good.

Jack: Okay.

Maggie: Um, not so great. Uh, Jack, Jennifer, could you scooch just a smidge closer together, please? Please?

Jack: Um, certainly. Okay. [Jack and Jennifer uncertainly move closer]

Maggie: Oh, perfect! Oh, that's perfect. Ok. Now everybody say "cheese."

J/J/A: Cheese!

[Jack, Jenn, and Abby take a series of pictures, some serious, some funny. They all laugh.]

Jennifer: Some things never change!

[Maggie goes and turns on some music. Edwin McCain's I Could Not Ask For More starts to play.]

Abby: Aren't you gonna ask Mommy to dance?

Jack, staring at Jennifer: Well, I don't know. Do you think she'll say yes?

Abby: You never know until you ask. [Abby takes Jack's hand and puts it in Jennifer's.]

Jennifer: Okay... Why not?

[Jack and Jennifer start to slow-dance to the song]

Jennifer: You know, for such a grade-A klutz, you were always a very smooth operator on the dance floor.

Jack: Stop, you'll make me blush.

Jennifer, laughing: Away from the dance floor is another topic. [Note from me: I think the original line was supposed to be "Away from the dance floor is another story, because in Jack's next line he says "Speaking of stories..." Just something I noticed.]

Jack: Well, cancel that blush. Speaking of stories, do you know what my favorite one is?

Jennifer: Hmm... Winnie the pooh?

[They both laugh]

Jack: No. It's you and me. It's the story of us.

[This seems to touch Jennifer and she and Jack gaze into each others' eyes... For the next few minutes, they reminisce about the past as flashbacks are shown to coincide with the song.]

[Jack and Jennifer continue to dance, as Maggie watches with Abby beside her.]

Abby: I just know they're going to get back together.

[The song ends, and an instrumental piece begins to play.]

Jack: I'm sorry, Jennifer. I'm afraid this is all the time I've got allotted for you.

[Jack walks over to Abby]

Jack: May I have this dance, princess?

Abby: Yes, you may, sir.

Jack, twirling Abby: And around, and around... Here we go. [Abby steps onto his toes, and begins to dance like that] Oh! Ow! Ha ha ha! Ow! Yeah! Ow! Yeah! Ow! I have a better idea. [He picks her up and dances holding her] Ok. Here we go. Much better. Ok. Here we go. See? Much better.

Jennifer, watching them dreamily: Oh, maybe this really can work.

[She walks over to Jack and Abby and clears her throat]

Jack: Oh, you see? You take one spin around the dance floor, they come back for seconds.

Jennifer: Oh, don't get too cocky, Daddy. The birthday girl requests the honor of dancing with her baby girl. Come on. [She picks up Abby and starts to dance with her]

Jack: Oh, by all means.

[Jack goes over by Maggie, still watching Jennifer and Abby]

Jack: This is perfect. This is just perfect. This is exactly right. Thank you. Thank you, Maggie.

Maggie: Well, if you'd given me a little more notice, I could have had the whole Horton clan here.

Jack: No, no. I mean, I mean, this is the way I wanted it.

Maggie: Yeah, I can see why. I still have a weakness for romance myself. So tell me, Jack, might this be a new beginning for two of my favorite people?

Jack: Well, it could be a very big night for us, Maggie. If I can muster up enough courage, Jennifer just might say yes.

Maggie: Yes to what?

[Jack beings whispering in Maggie's ear, and her eyes widen.]

[Jack, Jennifer, and Abby are now sitting at a table, and Abby gives Jennifer a present]

Jennifer: Thank you, Baby. Let's see here. My goodness, how pretty. Did you wrap this? Wow! Let's see what we have here. [Jennifer opens it and finds a photo album, with the cover being a picture Abby drew of the three of them.] Oh, my goodness! You made this?

Abby: Pretty good, huh?

Jennifer: Pretty good? This is gorgeous! Thank you so much, Baby. I love it. Wow!

Abby: Do you think I made Daddy's head a little too big?

Jennifer, teasing: Not at all, it's perfect.

Jack: Behave yourself or you won't be getting my present.

Jennifer: Jack, you didn't have to.

Jack: I know I didn't, but I did anyway. I'll give it to you later.

Abby: Ok, Daddy... Open your mouth and close your eyes.

Jack: A request I'd oblige my loving and trustworthy daughter.

[He closes his eyes and opens his mouth. Abby shoves a big piece of cake in his face.]

Jennifer: Ooh, I don't know about that. Oh! Oh, yeah! Good!

Jack: Wait a minute! Oh, Abby!

[Jennifer and Abby are laughing]

Jennifer: Well, she gave you the piece with the flower -

Abby: I got you the piece with a flower on it!

Jack, who's laughing too: Yeah, but I want it in my mouth, not on my face.

Jennifer: Hey, don't be such a big baby. Hold on. Let me help you. Come over here. [Jennifer wipes Jack's face with a napkin]

Jack: Thanks. Help me.

Jennifer: Oh, she got you.

Jack: Yes.

Jennifer: I wonder where she learned all this hijinks from, hmm?

Jack: Hijinks?

[Abby's baby-sitter walks up to them]

Monica: Hi, everybody.

Jack: Oh, hello.

Jennifer: Oh, hi.

Monica: Am I too early?

Jack: Oh, no. No, no, not at all. Actually, uh, I was just about to take Abigail home, right?

Abby, looking intently at Jack: I -

Jennifer: Wait, I saw that. What are you two up to?

Jack: Never you mind. Abigail's going home now. Your night is just beginning.

Jennifer: Oh, Jack, this was really, really nice of you to do this, but, you know what? Why don't we all just go home?

Jack: Sorry, that's out of the question. I'm not quite done yet.

Abby: Night, Mommy. Have a good time with Daddy.

Jennifer: Okay. Thank you, Baby. See you later, ok?

Abby: Night, Daddy.

Jack: You sleep tight, Princess, hmm?

Maggie: Here, Abby, don't forget your cake. Bye.

Jack, to Jennifer: Believe me, you're going to be very glad you stayed.

[Jennifer just looks at him curiously.]
