Handsome, funny, confused Jack Deveraux has been the subject of much controversy. In 1987, he moved to Salem and started causing all kinds of trouble. In the three years since, there have been three women in his life, and he hasn't had much success with any of them.

Kayla Brady, the love of Steve Johnson's life, was the first lady Jack became attracted to in Salem. Actually, he had met her in Hawaii, they had had a brief fling, and he was unable to forget her. He looked her up when he got to town, and they became friends. She soon became employed by the Deveraux's as Jack's nurse; he was suffering from Hodgkin's disease at the time, and it didn't look like he was going to live very long. During the time they had spent together, Jack had fallen desperately in love with Kayla, and he asked her to marry him. She was really in love with Steve, but Steve pushed her into saying yes. They married, and when he recovered, like any red-blooded American husband, he wanted to make love to the woman he adored, but Kayla just couldn't do it. When he found out that it was because she was still in love with Steve, he went into a jealous rage, and raped her. Needless to say, that was the end of that relationship. Kayla pressed charges, but Jack never went to jail.

Everyone in town found out about his dastardly deed, and from that time until very recently, all of Kayla's relatives hated Jack, especially her brother Roman, who wanted to kill him. As a matter of fact, most of his own relatives, including his own brother and sister, hated him too. Only pretty, young Melissa Anderson still saw the good in him. She knew about the rape, but didn't care. She had fallen in love with him at work, and wanted him the whole time he was married to Kayla. Once he was a free man, she pursued a relationship with him. He was happy to have one person on his side. Melissa and Jack were together for a while, but she finally realized he wasn't the man she thought he was, and left him at the altar.

Feeling guilty about raping Kayla, and not being able to have a successful relationship, Jack threw himself into his work, and decided against getting involved with anyone for a while. Then Melissa's cousin, Jennifer Horton, came into his life. Jennifer started working for him at the paper, and he began to have conflicting feelings. He slowly fell in love with her, enjoying all their little fights and sparring, yet he pushed her away, at the same time. He didn't trust himself, or feel worthy of her love. For months and months, Jack denied his feelings to himself and to everyone else, but Jennifer knew that he felt the same way she did. Finally, on a deserted island, they made love, yet afterwards, he still couldn't give himself to her, totally. He did follow her to a strange country and put his life on the line, several times, to rescue her.

Then, the unthinkable happened; she married the man Jack was trying to rescue her from! Jack knew that she couldn't actually love Lawrence Alamain (her husband), but she insisted that she was going to stay married to him.

That left Jack all alone. Now that Steve is dead, Kayla's alone too, and she has finally forgiven Jack. Is it possible that Jack and Kayla might get back together? After all the heartache he's felt about raping her, that would be just what he needs to know that it's all over, and he's truly forgiven. Stranger things have been known to happen.
