To truly capture the full essence of the beauty that was Jack and Jennifer's love story, it is necessary to understand what they had to overcome in order to be together. Mainly, it was Jack's old ways and the bad things he had done that kept them apart, because those actions along with other circumstances in his family caused him to build up emotional walls, for fear of hurting someone else and getting hurt himself again.
Jennifer never ignored what Jack had done, she accepted it, and never doubted that he had changed, and had developed into a good person. Jack's being a rapist was never romanticized; it haunted him for years and he did not escape the emotional repercussions and consequences that came along with dealing with what he had done. This does NOT condone what he did, but it shows how it was possible for him to be redeemed and for Jennifer to fall in love with him.
The following pictures are from Jack's seedy days, when he was in the Kayla/Patch storyline, and when he used Melissa to further his political career. They were almost married, but she left him at the altar.

What should have been a happy night for Jack after being elected Assemblyman was tarnished - Jack was furious when a reporter gave him candid photos that proved that Jack's wife, Kayla, was having an affair with Steve Johnson.

Jack confronted Kayla about her affair with Steve.

This confrontation led to Jack raping Kayla.

When Jack finds Kayla and Steve kissing on the roof of the loft, he grabs Kayla.

Steve and Jack continue to fight over Kayla on the roof, and it gets out of hand. Steve accidentally pushes Jack off the roof. This led to Jack needing a kidney transplant, and because Steve knew that secretly, he and Jack were brothers, he was the donor.

After Jack was out of the hospital, Kayla decided to press charges against Jack for rape, and get a divorce from him. He started to act very cool towards her. He didn't consider it rape, since they were married. Jack was smooth and charming on the surface, but his devious nature shined through. He had many schemes up his sleeve.

After the bad press Jack got from the settled case Kayla had against him, his political career was likely in jeapordy. Melissa Anderson had worked for Jack before for his political job, and she had fallen in love with him. Her father, Mickey Horton, was running against Jack for an office, and so Jack decided to use Melissa to his advantage. He started up a relationship with her, but he did not love her.

Jack and Melissa became engaged, against the wishes of her parents and family, but she soon found out how Jack really felt about her after seeing him kissing Kristina, a Kiriakis houseguest. She made it to the altar, but didn't leave married to Jack.

Interestingly enough, Jennifer Horton was a bridesmaid in this would-be wedding, since she and Melissa were cousins. Melissa calmly said in front of everyone at the church that she had loved Jack, and he had used her. She would not be marrying him.

After Jack turned from his old ways and began a relationship with Jennifer, the harsh reality of his rape of Kayla was thrown back in his face when Jennifer, the love of his life, was raped by Lawrence Alamain. Jennifer did not tell him for awhile what had happened, and when she called him a rapist, when she actually was talking about Lawrence, Jack was devastated. He despised what he had done, and it broke his heart to think that Jennifer would view him as what he once was. When he finally found out what had happened to Jennifer, he still wasn't sure of whether they had a future, as represented by the conversation they had after he found out (see below).

Jack: Now that you know first hand- what it's like, what I'm... capable of...
Jennifer: No.
Jack: You see there is no difference between Lawrence and myself.
Jennifer: That is wrong! There is a big difference! You are nothing like Lawrence, nothing!
Jack: You can't tell me that, I'm sorry, you can't -
Jennifer: I can tell you that because I love you - and I know that you would never hurt me.
Jack: I've already hurt you.
Jennifer: No, we hurt each other; and that's why it is time for it stop. That's why I told you, because if there is any hope for us ever to be together, you had to know. All the secrets have to be put out in the open.
Jack: You really think that will make a difference?
Jennifer: It will if we want it to be. I mean, we can work this out Jack. We can work this out so that we can be together. We both have to want it, though. I know I do.

Jack: You were raped. I raped someone. Do you think you can forget that? Now before you answer, please just think. Look me in the eye and tell me that you can say honestly that you can forget what I did.
Jennifer: No.
Jack: Thank you. That was very good. No assimilation, no beating around the bush, just... no. Clear, quick... final.
Jennifer: Final, Jack? Did I say anything about final?
Jack: You said that you couldn't forget. What else is there to say?
Jennifer: There's a lot more to say, and I would like you to listen to what I have to say.
Jack: If that's what you'd like.
Jennifer: Yeah. You know Jack, for a long time, I pretended not to see that side of you. I didn't want to hear about it, and I didn't want to think about it. All I wanted to think about were the good things; the things that I love about you. But then I realized that if you love somebody, you have to accept everything about them. You can't take the good, and ignore the bad. And what we had together was so good, Jack. I don't want to live without that. I don't know if I can.
Jack: I don't know if you... I don't know how you can say that sort of thing. When you look at me, you see Lawrence.
Jennifer: That is not true. I do not!
Jack: Yes, when you see... you...
Jennifer: I do not see Lawrence! All right, after Lawrence raped me, Jack, I wanted to die, allright? But I didn't. Something inside me did. And the only time that I feel alive and happy is when I'm with you! That's what kept me going through all this, is the thought of being with you again. You kept me going! So when I look at you, I don't see Lawrence. All I see when I look at you is our future together.
Jack: Not that I don't appreciate what you just said, I just don't understand how you could say it.
Jennifer: Well you don't have to understand it. Just accept it, Jack.
Jack: Then you have to accept this; you've been hurt before, maybe you could get hurt again.
Jennifer: No! You would never hurt me.
Jack: I'm supposed to put that in writing now? I mean, if I do put it in writing, are you going to read the fine print, because I don't come with a warranty.
Jennifer: I don't care.
Jack: I have a track record. You...
Jennifer: I believe in you.
Jack: How can you say that? How can you say... how can you say I believe... there is evidence going up to here pointing in the direction- saying that I deal from the bottom of the deck. I always have. I always will. I mean, do you need police reports, you need medical records? How about a call from Whitney Baker; she could tell you stories that would send you screaming from the room. ARGH!
Jennifer: All right, Jack, we've looked at the pros and we've looked at the cons. It's time to make a decision, because it's time to leave. The question is, are we going to be leaving together?
